Everybody keeps talking about Batman Beyond these days. Whether they like it not, they all must admit it has become one of the most popular animated series ofthe decade. But why the hell is it so popular? Only because it's a Batman show? No, obviously, "there's something about Terry"...
I asked many persons to try and define what Batman Beyond is. What is Batman Beyond to you?

What BATMAN BEYOND means? Well, here's mine:

Redemption. Terry McGinnis is a kid who is given a second chance to atone for the sins of the past. Not too many people can that, which gives the show an added layer to it. The show is about redemption no matter what the episode is about. Terry's always there to save the day, becuase in his mind, he's saving himself. Very heavy stuff if you look into it enough.

Batman Beyond is such a fresh concept to begin with, and they've built such a cool history introducing us to some great characters and villains like Shriek, Inque and Spellbinder (to name a few). The visuals mesh beautifully with the music and as always, Timm's animation crew is top notch! Add great writing to the mix with some of the most talented voice actors/actresses and you're bound to end up with a classic!

Random thoughts about why batman beyond works for me. . .
From the opening credits and crunching techno theme, it's a whole new batman for a new generation . . . hip sensibility with a high tech feel . . . cool new villains (and returning classic villains) in a futuristic new gotham full of possibility . . . a rich sense of history (with occasional hints to the untold legacy of bruce wayne). . .

From a professional standpoint, I'm very impressed with Batman Beyond. It's darn well animated, well produced, well written, and an overall excellent show. One of, if not THE best superhero show on TV right now. Oh heck, it's THE best. I have all the episodes on tape, I tape them religiously, even though I've never worked on that show or the comics based on it, like I have for Superman and Batman.

But I'm a freakishly pathetic Batman fan, and I appreciate the episodes that focus on Old Bruce, better than the ones with Terry as the focus (which is most of them). Terry is a fine partner for Bruce, as good as Dick, Tim, Jim, Alfred and Barb, but I'm one of those die hard fanboy mouthbreathing weirdoes who believes Batman is Bruce, Bruce is Batman, and fiddling with that concept too much doesn't improve it. I enjoy the episodes very much as an alternative world sort of Batman story, much like an Elseworlds (which I AM quite tired of, lately) but I have a small lament that these couldn't be new episodes of Batman Adventures.

I realize that the economics of it suggest it's not going to happen, but the fan in me misses new Batman episodes...When I watch Superman episodes, I don't have any particular need for them to be Batman episodes, so it's missplaced thought, I suppose...perhaps because Bruce is a member of the cast, It's more of a tease for a Batmaniac such as myself. I suppose if we CAN'T have new Batman episodes, these are a wonderful bonus.

Yikes, did that meander, and say the word "Batman" a lot.

Ty the Guy. Secretly hoping for Kamandi, The Animated Series.
